Alternative Routes, the City Walk project, WUF7 Medellín 2014



A team of volunteers from the City Walk project, mostly students and recent graduates of Architecture, Design and different careers related to urban theme, are company on 5 alternative routes under the 7th World Urban Forum

The routes and Scheduling are:

A. Cisneros train station - Antioquia Museum

A. Cisneros train station - Antioquia Museum

Through this journey we propose to draw a physical line by the pedestrian promenade of Carabobo connecting some of the few historic buildings that survived the changes and transformations of a historic downtown full of contrasts.

Obligatory stops in Cisneros train station, buildings Vásquez and Carré, Square of the Light, Lounge Málaga , The Berrio park, The Veracruz Church, finally The Botero Square.



B. The San Pedro Cementery – The San Vicente Hospital
Meeting Point:  Hospital metro station, northeast exit

The cemeteries are in many cities forced step sites, for their formal characteristics or the story told by the tombs of famous owners, in the case of San Pedro Cemetery Medellín, which is now a museum. This is an excellent tour, which lets us know the history of the city from another perspective. The most influential families in the city have a space there, leaders, artists and the sadly notorious criminals have a space there.

After of cemetery we close our visit to the sector through the restored San Vicente Hospital, This is University Hospital and the birthplace of our cluster of health, building complex including a beautiful chapel, little known by the locals.

C. The Bolívar Park – Lounge Málaga

The cities are known using public transportation, eating in their traditional places, establishing relationships with people who live every day or enjoy nightlife. Downtown fabulous hidden spaces filled with history and a special magic entertained by their music, for their gastronomic offerings or the presence of authentic people living intensely these places that adopt as their own. The downtown of Medellín has many of these places and can become the perfect excuse to spend a night in it.

D. The Campos de Paz cementery – The Manuel Mejía Library
Meeting Point:  At Gate of the Cementery Campos de Paz

A visit to this area is the perfect excuse to discover some important architectural projects and approach the southwestern sector of the city . This is the Campos de Paz cemetery , Olaya Herrera Airport and Manuel Mejía Vallejo Library . The first holds a special magic for its characteristics of field - cemetery, the second is a project of the last century listed building and the third is one of the examples of contemporary architecture that are part of the icons of transformation urban city . Both cemeteries and airports have special care in projection away from urban centers , but the growth of cities , in many cases, ends up leaving these spaces immersed in its dense construction. This is the case of Campos de Paz and Olaya Herrera today are part of the city, surrounded by neighborhoods and buildings increasingly crowded .

Note: The tours are free, but this particular includes a shift in public transportation (taxi) from the cemetery to the Airport sector to be paid by participants.

The artist Fredy Serna invites us to enjoy the intense life of the main street of his neighborhood Castilla is also an opportunity to look back problem who lived and still live the city, which have faced and somehow calling attention to and touching them can understand and intervene them . The Neighborhood life is exciting, full of stories and street activity. In Castilla, even today you can breathe the aromas the city, Where people are happy and appropriate, they find on the street their instead of meeting,  livelihoods and fun. The 68th promenade is a clear example of this.

Note: The tours are free and is considered the use of public transport.  To reach the meeting place for this tour using public transportation (taxi) from the nearest Metro station (Tercentenario station or  Caribe station) to the The San Judas Church in Castilla neighborhood.
